India and Indians have been successively known for their male-dominating
society and patriarchal nature whenever it comes to equality notions for
women. India is progressing towards new inventions and technologies but
with regressive thoughts towards one or more genders existing in the
society except for men. We have always witnessed and heard that all the
burning questions are framed over a woman’s character if she does
something out of the box that involves her consent. Why is it so? Why is
there a need to question and frame the victim more rather than ask the
culprit?
Even before questioning, the issue is all about the safety of the whole
women’s community in Urban India. I would specifically highlight the
“women community” because in the past few years Urban India has
witnessed cases of Rape, Acid Attacks, Molestation, and Sexual Harassment
that is equitable towards the whole community.
If we look into some renowned cases like Suryanelli Sex Scandal (1996), the
Nirbahaya case (2012), Kathua Rape Case (2018) we could find a heart-
sickening report that how the specific gender exploits the rights of others. It
forces society to question the judiciary and law regarding the safety
measure of women in society. Politicians and officials not only look over
this topic on a very casual note but also comment on women’s integrity and
character.
Isn’t it devasting that women are still looked upon and judged over their
character after being victimized but there is still a red question mark for the
culprits? As the number of rape cases is increasing drastically in the
country, it’s high time to take control of it. This can be done only by passing
such legislation which makes the people scared and prevents them from
committing such offenses. Making and implementing the laws properly is
also necessary to reduce the crime rate. Women must be made aware and
strong enough to fight against the atrocities against them. Society must
have a mentality to stand for the victim and not for the ones who are
committing such crimes.
