The blue umbrella is written by a famous author, Ruskin Bond. This is a short novel, but the kind of moral lessons it teaches us, are simply overwhelming. It is a simple yet beautiful story of a 10 year old mountain girl named Biniya. She was living in a village near Tehri Road with her mother and her elder brother Bijju. One day, she took both her cows to the mountains for grazing. While roaming in the hills, she saw a beautiful blue umbrella that belonged to tourists.
Biniya was desperate to get the blue umbrella. She exchanged her lucky charm pendant of Tiger Claw for an umbrella and became very proud of her new possession. This caused her to earn the jealousy of some villagers, especially of a shopkeeper named Ram Bharosa who wanted to own the best umbrella in town by Hook or crook. When he asked Biniya to sell the umbrella to him, she refused. Her refusal turns him off. The boy from the neighborhood village helps Ram Bharosa out by stealing her umbrella when Biniya is out collecting porcupine quills. But Bijju catches the boy who reveals Rambharosa’s name behind the stealing.
After that, the villagers stopped visiting the shop. As a result, Ram Bharosa suffers a loss. Biniya feels sorry for Ram Bharosa and gives him her own umbrella as a gift. In return, he gives her a necklace with a bear claw in it. Which is also considered lucky? This novel was also directed by “Vishal Bhardwaj” and won The National Film Award for Best Children’s Film. So, dear readers, here is my review of this adorable story. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.
