From the past, a lot has been changed in terms of rules and regulations and duties to an extent but still we can hear about the contemporary issues being taken place somewhere or the other. The major one among the increasing issues is caste and caste-based discrimination.
The caste system in India has its roots in the ancient India. There was a time when all the castes were considered as equal in social status and anyone can take up any profession they liked even today it is same. There was no restriction in the matter of eating food and marriage with people from different professions. However with the commencement of practice in genetic occupation and coming in contact with the original people, situations changed and the birth of people decided their castes. As the time passed by, this also led to the division of society into high-caste and low-caste people those who cannot be mixed with each other. Inter caste dinning or marriage was banned as well. People who belonged to the lower classes were abused and as the time went by, their conditions became more miserable. They were poor and also from below poverty line, and did not adore equality in the society. They were not even given the right to take water from the common wells of villages, or allowed to go to temples or come close to the so called higher class peoples. Thus entering into an appropriate profession was based on an individual’s birth but not on his/her ability because caste system had the hold of a healthy growth of professions to an extent. Sometimes caste-based discrimination also leads to violence. In our country, caste-system makes the building up of democracy more difficult. Due to this, the societies get divided into the false groups and tend to support those people who belong to their own caste. They don’t pay much attention to the matter whether he/she is a deserving candidate or not. This is not good for the health of justice in our country. Our country would not be able to make actual development without this system being demolished completely.
The major concern in the contemporary Indian society is the security of people such as women and children, elderly people. The government is also aware about these issues and tried to tackle them through the constitution as well as social action. Some of the major socio-cultural issues have improved their situation from the past but still a lot more needs to be done in issues such as dowry, caste-system, communalism, drinking, drug addiction, child marriage, gender discrimination, etc.
