Until 2019 , Ladakh was a religion of the state of Jammu & Kashmir . In August 2019 , the Parliament of india passed an act by which Ladakh became a union territory on 31st October ,2019 .

INHABITANTS OF LADAKH :
People of Ladakh are as beautiful as the land of high passes .Ladakh is extremely influenced by the Tibetan culture from their cuisine to clothing habits .
The original population of Ladakh are dards , an ancient Aryan race but majority of them follow Buddhism and Islam . There are very few Hindus who resides there .
One of the most noticeable characteristic of the Ladakh society is the position of women . They hold a very respectful and prestigious place in the society and enjoy greater independence .
ECONOMY :
Most of the people in Ladakh are farmers and depend on agriculture ,farms and herding . Some people rely on tourism which is seasonal . They only earn during the tourist season which is April to July .
COSTUME :
The men in Ladakh basically wear a long wollen robe , in their local language it is known as ‘Goucha’ . Women are also wear same kind of robe which is called ‘Kuntop & Bok . A long hat ‘Perak’ is also worn by both men and women in Ladakh .
LANGUAGE :
Ladakhi and Tibetan are the most used languages spoken by the locals . However , Tibetan , Ladakhi , Balti and Urdu are the official languages in Ladakh .

CUISIN :
The domination of Tibetan Culture is very much visible in the most food items of Ladakh which are Thenthuk , Skyu , momos and thupka .

FESTIVALS :
Festivals celebrated in Ladakh are mainly harvest related and socio-religious by nature which are very much colorful and charming .

Chham ( Mask Dance ) is one of the most famous dance form in Ladakh . It signifies the good over evil . Chham dance form is basically performed by the monks in monasteries with their traditional Tibetan instrument .
The other famous dance forms are Jabro , Spao , Shondol , Chartses , Mentok , Stanmo and Iharna .
The folk music of Ladakh is basically holy recitation of sacred words . Yang chanting is one of the example of folk music .
Surana , Piwang and Daman are some famous instrument used by the ladakhians .
SPORTS :
A large majority of Ladakh prefer playing polo . Polo is extremely famous in places like Chuchot and Drass in Ladakh . But during summer , Archery is a very popular game among the ladakhis .
ARTS AND CRAFTS :
Ladakh is famous for its splendid work of arts and crafts . Items for daily use like cooking pots , bowls , ladles , chhang pots , tea pot , tea cups are manufactured and agriculture tools also manufactured by local blacksmiths (Gara) . Pattu and baskets are some signature style in Leh Ladakh .Pattu (rough woolen cloth material ) is produced by local women and baskets are woven out of willow twigs or particular kind of grass . The jewellery of ladakh is also very unique and famous throughout the world . wooden products which are generally found in every room of Ladakh like low carved tables , carved lintels and pillars are also produced locally .
