Geater Noida: Galgotias University’s Department of Mass Communication is at the forefront of educational innovation, aligning its curriculum with the progressive ideals set forth in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Guided by the visionary leadership of Professor Agya Ram Pandey, the department recently conducted a transformative 15-day Journalistic Writing Workshop from January 5 to January 19, 2024. This workshop, specifically designed for the BA(JMC) Section-1 students, not only aimed to impart essential styles and structures of journalistic writing but also embraced a holistic, student-centric, practical-based learning approach.

The workshop’s primary objective was to instill in students a comprehensive understanding of journalistic writing, covering various genres such as hard news, features, reports, and reviews. Going beyond theoretical discussions, the curriculum emphasized the practicalities of adapting writing styles for different mediums, including television, print, and radio.

During the second week of the workshop, students actively applied the skills they had acquired by crafting news stories within the classroom setting. This hands-on experience was enriched by real-time observation and guidance from experienced faculty members. Diverse write-ups, spanning the spectrum of journalistic forms, underwent thorough review and discussion, providing students with valuable insights into the art, tools, and techniques of effective journalism.

A central theme throughout the workshop was the integration of a multidisciplinary approach, aligning with the NEP-2020’s vision. Students were encouraged to explore diverse perspectives and angles, fostering an enriched ability to navigate and report on the complexities of the real world.

The NEP-2020’s emphasis on assessment reforms was diligently incorporated into the workshop. Students were tasked with writing journalistic stories, which underwent rigorous assessment by all faculty members. Subsequent class discussions provided a platform for constructive critique and collective learning, ensuring continuous improvement in their writing skills.

In pursuit of the NEP-2020 mandate regarding Teacher Training and Professional Development, BJMC semester-1 students were strategically organized into five groups, each under the mentorship of distinguished faculty members. Dr. Anurag Anant, Dr. Bhawani Shankar, Dr. Pramod Pandey, Mr. Shekar Sinha, and Dr. Gajendra Pratap Singh led their respective groups on insightful field visits to different locations in Delhi and the NCR region.

These field visits transcended the traditional boundaries of a classroom, exposing students to the dynamic realities of journalistic reporting. The diverse locations included a district court in Gautam Budh Nagar, a village in Dhankaur for civic issue reporting, the Government Institute of Medical Sciences in Greater Noida, a slum in Kasana Village, and village visits in Noida and Delhi for cosmopolitan stories.

Students, alongside their mentors, actively engaged in gathering firsthand information from the field, turning their experiences into compelling stories. These narratives found a well-deserved platform on the Department of Mass Communication’s portal, Yuva Junction, showcasing the students’ newfound skills and practical insights to a wider audience.

This workshop serves as a testament to Galgotias University’s unwavering commitment to providing a dynamic, hands-on education that aligns seamlessly with the evolving landscape of journalism. The journey from initial field exploration to the eventual publication on Yuva Junction exemplifies a commitment to excellence and practical proficiency in journalistic storytelling.
