NEVER HEARD OF SANITARY NAPKIN PADS SAYS WOMEN IN GREATER NOIDA SLUM AREAS

Story By:- Nikita Desai

GREATER NOIDA: The slum in front of Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) near Kasana Village, is  witnessing a concerning reality where Girls and women are not aware of the menstrual hygiene,  ‘what is sanitary napkin?’ said  Roshini, a local slum dweller, on asking about sanitary napkin and Hygiene.

The Women named Imrana Begum revealed that they do not have of awareness regarding government schemes and the initiatives of the health ministry aimed at promoting menstrual hygiene. The use of ash, grass, and dirty cloth during menstruation is distressingly common among these women, showcasing a dire need for education and awareness.

The way these women use dirty clothes during their menstruation is a topic of concern. The slum areas literally are so insanitary; the women of these areas have migrated from Assam to greater noida as rag picker. Most of the family living in slum which is in front of GIMS Hospital noida belongs form muslim community except one family which is migrated form Allahabad and belongs form Hindu family. slum has many children who are in school going age but they are destined to be rag picker and playing in garbage. teenager girls are busy in their daily routines and house works.

Teenage girls in these slum areas are particularly vulnerable, lacking education about the significance of menstrual hygiene. The absence of awareness about sanitary napkins and proper menstrual care is a pressing concern, hindering the overall well-being of adolescent girls.

Tragically, one woman, Reshmika, shared the heartbreaking story of her daughter’s demise due to menorrhagia (heavy bleeding). she said

My daughter died  of menorrhagia  (heavy bleeding)’ Reshmika A woman from the slum area informed about her daughter that how her daughter died from heavy bleeding, she was suffering from heavy bleeding as she was using dirty piece of cloth from last five year as she was not aware of what exactly a sanitary napkin is

The unawareness of women health in the society is a considerable matter of concern as it is also being a barrier between the growth of country and development, this is also lacking the involvement of women in society.

Despite government initiatives to provide menstrual hygiene kits and sanitary napkins, these efforts have failed to reach the slum areas in Greater Noida. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s scheme targeting adolescent girls in the age group of 10-19 years in rural areas remains largely unknown in these neglected communities.

The enduring stigma surrounding menstruation in Indian society further complicates matters, with women often reluctant to openly discuss periods and intimate hygiene. Addressing this deep-rooted taboo is crucial for the success of any initiative aimed at promoting menstrual hygiene and overall women’s health in marginalized communities. The urgent need for targeted awareness campaigns and improved accessibility to hygiene products in these slum areas cannot be overstated, as the well-being of countless women hangs in the balance.
