Nothing has changed in our country. Ever thought what goes through the mind of an eight year old as when she is drugged, locked up, gang-raped and then murdered. Five years ago it was 23yr old woman and now it’s an eight year old child. Asifa, a resident of Kathua city of Jammu & Kashmir, was detained in a local temple for several days and was given sedatives, raped for several days and then murdered. Police has arrested eight men, including a retired government official, four officers, a priest and a minor.
The society in which we live have always praise women as Goddess Durga, wash the feet of girls on Kanya Puja and on the other hand talk about the dressing sense of a girl or would expect girls not to go outside and talk with people. We cannot criticize women for this as majority of Indian women are more conscious about what society think about them. But Asifa was just 8 years old, wore a kurti and pyjamas and was kidnapped from a forest near to her home, where she was grazing her horses. She would have barely known what actually was happening with her. And such a heinous crime took place just because she belonged to a community of Muslims nomadic tribe. India woke up to this crime only after the Hindu right-wing groups protested against the arrest of the accused, who also belong to the Hindu community. The situation got more out of control when the ministers from BJP attended a rally to support the accused men. Is this the country we are proud of? How can we humans allow politics to interfere in such inconceivable brutality? If we can’t raise voice for this 8 year old child regardless of our gender, color, cast or religion then we are shame to humanity.
The case has become a religious crisis in an already polarized Indian region. The crime has shocked the community, by creating problems between the Hindus and Muslims in Jammu and Kashmir. Nobody is giving a thought that what Asifa’s family is going through now. They lost their only child; they wanted to see her growing up, but destiny made them see her death. They were also denied to perform Asifa’s last rites. Women in India are feeling insecure day by day because rapists are roaming freely with no fear for judiciary.
What is government waiting for, where are we taking our country? Didn’t those criminals have their own family and children? What do they achieve by destroying the family of someone on the basis of religion? Will the crime against women ever end? These questions will never be answered unless and until the government decides to take a serious action on the previous cases. If timely action had been taken before in such crimes against women, surely things would have been better.
